Getting around

The neighborhood

The Hilton sits on the border between Union Square and the Tenderloin, a neighborhood with high levels of homelessness that is the locus of the city's fentanyl crisis — and also a rich cultural district with the theater district, vibrant bars, historic LGBTQ+ activism and incredible late-night food. Take common-sense precautions and visit with compassion.

Getting around

Powell Street station, a short walk away, serves Muni Metro (T to Chinatown; J K L M N S to the Ferry Building; K L M S to the Castro) and BART (Ferry Building, the Mission, Berkeley, Oakland). Tap a credit card on every Muni vehicle, cable cars included, and on BART — tap the same card again to exit. The historic F streetcar runs along Market Street to the Ferry Building and the Castro.

What “nearby” means

The official list picks places within a 20-minute walk, or one 20-minute ride on BART, Muni or a cable car with no transfers. San Francisco is a compact 7×7-mile city that rewards walking — there is far more than fits on any list, so go explore.

Staying safe

  • Main streets are busy and generally fine by day; the heat shows where incidents are reported, not where you will be harmed.
  • After dark, prefer lit main streets or a rideshare for longer walks, and keep your phone out of reach of passing hands.
  • Car break-ins are very common — never leave anything visible in a car (they are not counted in this map).
